6 Cultural Universes, One Enduring Fantasy

From American comics to Japanese manga, from cinema to literature, the augmented soldier pervades every form of storytelling.

A Design Fiction Research Project

This corpus was built as part of a design fiction methodology exploring how popular culture imaginaries can fuel innovation — particularly in defense and military contexts.

By mapping fictional armors across time and cultural lineages, this research reveals how collective imagination shapes technological ambitions, and how R&D in turn inspires new fictions.

The dataset spans 137 years of creative production across 6 major cultural channels, capturing the evolving relationship between humans, technology, and warfare in our stories.
